What Do You Do Once You've Finished Your Degree?

After the hard work and dedication you have put forth to increase your knowledge and expertise in your field, you have finished your degree. Congratulations! This is a major accomplishment towards your goals and aspirations, however, your work continues. Now is the time to focus on planning what you will do with your new certification. To successfully transition to life after being a student, you must follow the appropriate steps. It can feel overwhelming or confusing about what to do next, if you do not have a plan in place. I have summed up this process in 4 practical steps. When you’ve finished your degree, celebrate, evaluate, re-create, and don’t procrastinate. I explain what is involved in each step of the process below.
1 - Celebrate
Take the time to celebrate this accomplishment. It did not come easy. You have worked hard to earn your degree, so you need to recognize this milestone in a way that suits your needs. For some, it may be purchasing something meaningful to reward yourself for the sacrifices made during your studies. For others, the reward may be going on a celebratory trip or having a celebration with family and friends at home. Whatever you decide to do, ensure that it is in line with your financial goals. It is not in your best interest to acquire extra debt, particularly if you have not found employment or you have not received a pay increase as a result of your new level of education (this type of benefit is offered by some organizations). I strongly encourage you to celebrate, but in a financially responsible way.
2 - Evaluate
Take some time to evaluate the quality of your learning experience by asking the following self-reflective questions: How would you rate your learning experience? Are you satisfied? What are some key takeaways from your programming? Would you recommend your program to someone interested in your field of study? Would you take your program again? Would you attend the same institution, whether in-class or online? These are all great questions for self-reflection. In fact, I believe that you should routinely evaluate your learning experience, including the admission process and each subsequent course to ensure that you are getting a return on your investment in the form of quality.
